New article on scaling chlorophyll fluorescence out in Global Change Biology

12/22/2016

I'm proud to announce the publication of a study on solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) measured at both the canopy and leaf-scales is now available online in Global Change Biology. This study represents a strong effort led by Hualei Yang, a graduate student at Nanjing University who spent two years on a fellowship at the Ecosystems Center at the Marine Biological Center.

The study, based on intenstive field measurements at the leaf level, and near-remote measurements of SIF made above the canopy at Harvard Forest during the summer of 2014, aims to link the physiological processes occuring at the leaf level with the broad signal collected above the canopy across the growing season. Further, the study aims to link carbon cycling measurements, in the form of gross photosynthesis and gross primary productivity, at both scales to strengthen quantitative relationships of fluorescence and photosynthesis. As SIF is gaining more utility at the satellite level as an estimate of gross primary productivity, there is an urgent need to 'ground truth' the linkages at the leaf and canopy level.
